Fabrice Ardhuin

... ocean waves and more ... find me at Laboratoire d'Océanographie Physique et Spatiale (LOPS), Bât. 611, RdC, Ifremer - soon (March 2016) a new office at IUEM.

Research director, CNRS, IUEM - Ifremer,  Brest

 Laboratoire d'Océanographie Physique et Spatiale - LOPS - (www.umr-lops.fr)
LOPS is a joint research unit between CNRS, Ifremer, IRD, UBO.

I happen to be the chairman of this new LOPS structure, which, personally, is a great opportunity to make easier the combination of in situ measurements with satellite remote sensing. I also play a lot with numerical wave modelling, some theoretical aspects and many types of data (anything with an ocean wave signal in it).

  Research interests:
Ocean waves and their various impacts on ocean  circulation (mixing and wave-driven currents) the cryosphere (sea ice and floating ice tongues), seismology (microseism) atmosphere (momentum and other fluxes) remote sensing (well yes, the first thing you see of the ocean are the waves ...), geomorphology and coastal land use.

 Regions of interest:
Anywhere on planet Earth... there are always interesting things to learn here and there

Why I'm doing it?
Waves are fascinating to watch... but also many people need information about waves (which is why we have created and we maintain the IOWAGA database and develop the WAVEWATCH III model). I do believe that research should be mindful of applications.

 Projects:
I'm still working in the context of the ERC-funded IOWAGA project there are still new things going on there although I have little time for editing web pages.

I'm very much interested by wave signals from the future CFOSAT  (led by D. Hauser) and SWOT satellite missions (member of the Science Team).  I am also supposed to co-lead the "axis 7" of LabexMer ( www.labexmer.eu )... doing what I can there. Apologies to all the colleagues for slow actions ..

Teaching:
Knowledge has to be shared. Beyond a small circle of Ph.D. students (Charles Peureux, Pedro Guimaraes, Lucia Pineau-Guillou, Guillaume Boutin), post-docs (Justin Stopa, Joris Pianezze) and collaborators (hard to list! ) I'm teaching mostly at UBO - Marine Physics Master program, and a little at E.C. Nantes and ENSTA ParisTech.  I'm also trying to finish up a book, together with Jean-Francois Filipot. My dream would have been to update O.M. Phillips treatise on upper ocean physics, but I'm sticking to what I know better "waves in geosciences", trying to be readable even by seismologists... Well, yes, Eleonore and Anne, I know there is a long way to go.
